Special Model or Custom Build?

Sometimes your model is too unique or you want to build a fully custom case. That's exactly where Pick-and-pluck foam comes in — this guide shows you how.

What is Pick-and-pluck foam? Pick-and-pluck foam (also called grid foam or pluck foam) is a pre-scored foam where small cubes can be removed by hand along pre-cut grid lines — no knife or scissors needed. The result is a perfectly fitted custom insert for fragile objects such as model trains, cameras or collectibles. All you need is a paint marker to trace the outline.

The Guide

Step by Step: How to Customize Pick-and-pluck Foam

01
Step 1 · Preparation
Get to Know Your Foam

Place the foam on a clean, flat surface. The top surface shows a uniform grid of pre-scored lines — these divide the foam into small individual cubes that can be pulled out one by one. The foam consists of two layers: the scored top layer (the picking layer) and a solid base plate underneath that supports your object.

Tip: Hold the foam up to the light — this makes the grid lines much easier to see before you start.
02
Step 2 · Positioning
Place Your Model on the Foam

Place your model upside down (underside facing up) on the foam. This exposes all protruding parts — the chassis, wheels, couplings and gears — so you can account for them in your tracing. Make sure to leave at least 2–3 rows of cubes as a border around the model to keep the frame stable.

03
Step 3 · Marking
Trace the Outline with a Paint Marker

Using a light-coloured paint marker (e.g. Edding 751), carefully trace around the full outline of your model. Think in grid units: follow the scored lines and round outward to the nearest grid line. Pay close attention to protruding details like couplings and axle ends — add extra notches in your tracing for these areas.

Tip: Go over the outline twice so the line stays clearly visible once you lift the model off the foam.
04
Step 4 · Plucking
Remove the Foam Cubes

Grip a cube at the edge of your outline, give it a slight twist and pull upward — it detaches cleanly along the pre-scored lines. Work your way inward cube by cube. All cubes inside the marked outline are removed; everything outside stays in place.

Tip: Test-fit your model as you go — this helps you spot early on where a few more cubes need to come out.
05
Step 5 · Check
Test the Fit

Place your model — now the right way up — gently into the cutout. It should settle in snugly and be held firmly on all sides without needing any force. Check every side: no sensitive parts should protrude above the foam edge. Remove additional cubes if needed until the fit is just right.

Tip: The cutout can be slightly tighter than the model — the foam has a natural give that holds the object securely in place.
06
Step 6 · Done
Place the Foam Insert in Your Case

Place the finished foam insert with your embedded model into the case. The solid base plate slides in flat and keeps everything in position. Your model is now safe, shock-protected and completely secured in its custom-fit form — ready for transport or long-term storage.

Conclusion

The Perfect Result

Pick-and-pluck foam is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect fragile models professionally. No glue, no cutting, no special tools — just trace and pluck to create a perfectly tailored insert. The method works equally well for locomotives, cameras, drones, tools, figures and many other objects.
