Which insert fits which box?
Whether you're buying a new box with an insert or just looking for a replacement insert for a box you already have, the first two letters of the article number tell you which box an insert fits. The three digits after them stand for the height.
1. The code in the article number
Example: JV040A004
- JV: footprint, fits the Eurobox 60 × 40
- 040: 40 mm total height, of which 10 mm is the foam base, leaving 30 mm of usable height
- A004: the insert's consecutive number
| Code | Insert size | Fits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| JV | 570 × 370 mm | Eurobox 60 × 40 | only together with the levelling base KABA010 |
| EU | 560 × 360 mm | Eurobox 60 × 40, including the stackable one | sits directly on the bottom of the box; for tall inserts, Zugliegen and PanoramaLiegen |
| IU | 370 × 270 mm | Eurobox 40 × 30 | only together with the levelling base DEMENL010 |
| DD | 360 × 260 mm | Eurobox 40 × 30 | sits directly on the bottom of the box; for tall inserts (H0/00 gauge, upright) |
| KN | 360 × 270 mm | Eurobox 40 × 30 | Zugliege |
| DS | 550 × 345 mm | storage box DSLB075 | it does also fit the Eurobox 60 × 40, but we don't recommend it: the gap to the box wall is too large |
| KQ | 600 × 420 mm | IKEA ALEX drawer | Zugliege |
| CP | 500 × 500 mm | no box | zigzag loco cradle |
| HH / ZL | 1085 × 540 / 1005 × 715 mm | DIN A1 plan chest |
Zugliegen and PanoramaLiegen have numbers such as EUMEWCA01 or KN030A01. Here, too, the first two letters show the footprint.

2. Why there are two sizes for the same Eurobox
All Euroboxes have a rim running round the base, about 10 mm high.
- JV and IU inserts (570 × 370 / 370 × 270) use the full width of the box. They sit on the levelling base, which fills in the rim: KABA010 for 60 × 40, DEMENL010 for 40 × 30. Without a levelling base, the insert rests only on the rim and sags.
- EU and DD inserts (560 × 360 / 360 × 260) are about 10 mm smaller. This lets them slip past the rim right down to the bottom of the box, and you gain 10 mm of height. You need that for tall models, for example H0/00 gauge upright with a 65 mm insert.
Rule of thumb: JV and IU always need a levelling base, EU and DD don't.
3. How a Eurobox is built up
From bottom to top:
- Levelling base: KABA010 or DEMENL010, only for JV and IU.
- Foam insert: it has its own 10 mm base.
- Optional padding: a foam mat of 5, 10 or 15 mm. Use it to fill the space up to the lid if you prefer a firmer fit.
- 60 × 40: JVBA005 / JVBA010 / JVBA015
- 40 × 30: IUBA005 / IUBA010 / IUBA015
- for EU inserts: EUBA010
- Lid foam: it's glued into the recess of the hinged lid and protects the models from above. We recommend it for every box with a lid.
- 60 × 40: CFBA010S
- 40 × 30: JDBA010S
Side pads are only used with inserts that are open at the sides, i.e. Zugliegen, PanoramaLiegen and the 0 gauge inserts. They are glued to the inside of the box wall, exactly where the insert is open:
| Pad | Size | Box | Side | For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FABA005S-PE | 365 × 50 × 5 mm | 60 × 40 | short sides | Zugliegen with 5/7/10 compartments and PanoramaLiege |
| JNBA005S-PE | 565 × 50 × 5 mm | 60 × 40 | long sides | Zugliege with 9 compartments, H0/00 gauge |
| KPBA005S-PE | 270 × 50 × 5 mm | 40 × 30 | short sides | Zugliege with 7 compartments, N/Z gauge |
| KRBA005S-PE | 365 × 100 × 5 mm | 60 × 40 tall (ED 64/12) | short sides | 0 gauge inserts |
You need two pads per box, one for each open side.
Worked example: Eurobox 60 × 40 with hinged lid (70 mm internal height):
The lid foam sits in the recess of the lid. That's why build-ups of 70 to 75 mm fit, allowing for tolerances.
| Insert | Build-up | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 50 mm | levelling base 10 + insert 50 + lid foam 10 | 70 mm, fits |
| 55 mm | levelling base 10 + insert 55 + lid foam 10 | 75 mm, fits |
| EU 65 mm | insert 65 + lid foam 10 | 75 mm, fits |
| 40 mm | levelling base 10 + insert 40 + lid foam 10 | 60 mm, 10 mm to spare; with JVBA010 padding: 70 mm |
4. Box by box

5. Same insert, two numbers
Some inserts are identical and are simply sold under two numbers for two gauges. So if your gauge isn't listed, the number for the other gauge will often fit.

6. Frequently asked questions
- I already have an Auer Eurobox 60 × 40. What do I need?
A JV insert plus the levelling base KABA010, or an EU insert without a levelling base. We also recommend the lid foam CFBA010S. - Does a JV insert fit without a levelling base?
No. It then rests only on the rim of the box and sags. - Does a 40 × 30 insert fit in a 60 × 40 box?
No. The size has to match the box: JV/EU for 60 × 40, IU/DD/KN for 40 × 30. - What do the digits in the article number mean?
The total height in mm, including the 10 mm foam base. So 040 means 30 mm of space for the model. - What are the 5/10/15 mm mats for?
They're optional padding so that nothing rattles about. You don't need them for the build-up. - Do I need side pads?
Only for Zugliegen, PanoramaLiegen and 0 gauge inserts, because these are open at the sides. - Do the inserts also fit Euroboxes from other manufacturers?
Usually, yes, for example Euro containers 60 × 40 and 40 × 30 from Utz, Bito, SSI Schäfer or Allit. But please measure carefully, as there is no standard internal size. What matters is the length and width at the bottom, i.e. inside the rim, and the internal height up to the lid. - Does a DS insert fit the Eurobox 60 × 40?
It does fit, but we don't recommend it because the gap to the box wall is too large. The DS inserts are made for the storage box DSLB075. - Are there replacement inserts for the FSLB storage box or the magnetic box?
We only sell these boxes as a complete set. For a replacement insert, please get in touch with our customer service.
